Tesco is the UK’s largest supermarket chain and one of the country’s biggest private employers. Its large stores, Express shops, online grocery hubs and distribution centres need a constant flow of store assistants, online shoppers, warehouse operatives and drivers, with full-time, part-time, night and seasonal options.
From 29 March 2026, Tesco raised hourly pay for store and warehouse colleagues by 5.1%, taking the standard rate to £13.28 an hour outside London and £14.55 inside the M25. This guide explains the roles, pay, your rights under UK law, the visa position for overseas applicants and how to apply safely.

Salary for Tesco Jobs in the UK
Most Tesco store and warehouse roles are paid hourly. The main 2026 rate is set by the Tesco–Usdaw pay deal, and some roles add premiums for night work, Sundays or specialist skills. Drivers and team leaders earn more. All rates below are per hour before tax.

Where the Hiring Happens
All Tesco vacancies are posted on the official Tesco Careers website, where you can search by postcode and role type. You will also see Tesco jobs on Indeed UK and on the government’s Find a Job service, but always complete the application on Tesco’s own site. Seasonal hiring for Christmas usually starts around September and October.
Visa Position for Overseas Applicants
Since 22 July 2025, the Skilled Worker visa generally requires jobs at RQF level 6 (degree level). Store assistant, warehouse operative, sorting and delivery roles are well below that level, so UK employers cannot sponsor overseas workers for them. You can only apply if you already have the right to work in the UK, for example as a British or Irish citizen, with settled or pre-settled status, on a Graduate visa, as the dependant of a visa holder, on a student visa within its weekly hour limit, or on the Youth Mobility Scheme (which includes a ballot-based India Young Professionals Scheme for eligible 18–30 year olds).
Contract, Benefits and Legal Rights
Minimum payFrom 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21+, £10.85 for 18–20 and £8.00 for 16–17 and apprentices.

Paid holidayFull-time workers get 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (28 days for a 5-day week), pro rata for part-time.
Pension & sick payEligible workers are auto-enrolled into a workplace pension, and Statutory Sick Pay applies if you are off ill.
Written termsYou must receive a written statement of your main terms from day one.
Union & equalityYou have the right to join a union and to fair treatment under the Equality Act 2010.
The Real Working Environment
Store work is busy and customer-facing, with peaks at lunchtime, evenings, weekends and before holidays. Shifts can start early for deliveries or run late into the evening. Online pickers walk a lot and work against a timer. Staff receive a colleague discount card, which many see as a strong perk.
Distribution centres are large, fast and cold in chilled areas, with strict safety rules and pick-rate targets. Shifts can be long, and nights are common. Many workers value the stable hours, union representation through Usdaw and the chance to pick up overtime.

3
Apply online. Fill in the form, choose your available hours and complete any short online assessment.
4
Attend the interview. Store roles often have a short interview; some warehouse roles include a site tour or trial.
5
Complete checks and induction. Share right-to-work documents and bank details, then attend paid induction training.
Scams and Common Mistakes
⚠ “Visa sponsorship” offers: Anyone promising a sponsored UK visa for a warehouse, store or sorting job is misleading you. These roles are not eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship.
⚠ Fees and fake agents: Genuine UK employers never charge for applications, interviews or training. Do not pay for a “certificate of sponsorship” for these jobs.
⚠ Wrong visa type: Do not come on a visitor visa to “start work later”. Working without permission can lead to removal and a future visa ban.
