Fastrack and Sonata are two of the most recognised watch brands in India, and both belong to Titan Company. The watches that end up on store shelves and e-commerce sites pass through busy production floors where hundreds of workers assemble movements, fit straps, check quality and pack finished pieces. For people with a 10th, 12th or ITI background, this is one of the cleaner and more organised factory sectors to work in.
This guide explains what factory work behind these brands actually involves: the daily routine of a production helper, an assembly operator and packing staff, the realistic salary you can expect, how hiring usually happens (directly, through contractors or as apprentices), and how to apply without falling for fake job offers.
One important point before we start: we are an independent career guide. We do not recruit for Titan, Fastrack or Sonata. Use this article to understand the job and prepare, and always apply through official channels or genuine, licensed agencies.
What the Work Involves
Watch manufacturing is precision work. Most entry-level jobs are on an assembly line, where each person handles one or two steps and passes the piece on. The pace is steady rather than heavy, and cleanliness is taken seriously because dust can damage a watch movement.
- Production Helper: moves trays of parts between stations, keeps the line stocked, labels bins, cleans work areas and supports operators.
- Assembly Operator: fits dials, hands, cases, crowns, back covers and straps using small tools, tweezers and fixtures, often under a magnifier.
- Packing Staff: places watches in boxes, adds warranty cards and tags, seals cartons, scans barcodes and prepares dispatch lots.
- Quality Checker: inspects finish, scratches, time accuracy and water-resistance test results before packing.
8:15 AM – Short team meeting: targets, quality alerts
8:30 AM – 12:30 PM – Line work with a short tea break
12:30 PM – Lunch (often subsidised canteen)
1:15 PM – 4:30 PM – Line work, output counting
4:30 PM – Clean station, hand over, log output
Many plants also run two or three shifts. Night shifts, where available, usually come with a small allowance.
In the first week, most new joiners are placed on simpler steps such as strap fitting, cleaning cases or packing, so they learn the line rhythm before handling delicate movements. Each station usually has a written work instruction with photos, and a senior operator or line leader checks your output regularly. Targets are counted per hour or per shift, but quality always comes first: one rejected piece can cost more time than five good ones.

Salary: What You Can Realistically Expect
Pay depends on the state’s minimum wage, whether you are on the company payroll or a contractor’s payroll, your shift and your experience. The ranges below are approximate monthly gross figures for entry and early-career roles.
Skills That Increase Your Salary
- ITI trade certificate (Fitter, Electronics Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic) – often moves you to a higher grade.
- Fine motor skill and speed – operators who keep quality high at a good pace get noticed for line-leader roles.
- Basic quality knowledge – understanding defects, 5S and simple checklists.
- Basic computer and barcode scanning – useful in packing and dispatch.
- Attendance record – sounds simple, but it directly affects renewal, incentives and permanent selection.
- Willingness to learn more than one station – multi-skilled operators can cover absent colleagues and are often first in line for grade revisions.
If you are still studying, choosing an ITI trade linked to electronics or precision fitting is one of the smartest moves for this sector. It not only helps you enter watch manufacturing but also opens doors in mobile phone assembly, wearables and electronics plants, which hire in large numbers across Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka.
Where Hiring Happens
Titan’s watch manufacturing and assembly work has historically been centred around Hosur in Tamil Nadu, with assembly and component units in Uttarakhand (Pantnagar, Dehradun) and Roorkee. Locations and plant roles can change over time, so always check the current posting before travelling. Openings usually come through these routes:
- Official careers page: Titan Company’s careers section lists payroll and trainee roles.
- Apprenticeship portals: the government’s apprenticeship portal (NAPS) and NATS for diploma holders often carry trainee and apprentice seats from large manufacturers.
- Manpower contractors: many helper and packing roles are filled by licensed staffing companies working for the plant.
- Local ITIs and polytechnics: campus drives are common near industrial areas.
- Job portals: Naukri, Apna, WorkIndia and similar platforms – but check the employer carefully.
Contract, Benefits and Your Legal Rights
Whether you join on company rolls, a contractor’s rolls or as an apprentice, Indian labour law gives you basic protections:
- Minimum wage: you must be paid at least your state’s notified minimum wage for your skill category.
- PF and ESI: employers covered under these schemes must deduct and deposit them. Check your UAN on the EPFO portal.
- Payslip and appointment letter: ask for both. A contractor must also give you a written record of wages.
- Overtime: extra hours should be paid at the legally required overtime rate.
- Apprentices: receive a stipend (not a salary) and a certificate at the end, which is valuable for future jobs.
- Safety: you have a right to protective equipment and a safe workplace.
Before you sign anything, read the offer or appointment letter slowly. It should clearly mention your designation, the employer’s name (company or contractor), monthly wages, working hours, probation or contract period and notice period. If any of this is missing, ask for it in writing. Keep photos of your payslips and joining letter on your phone, because they become important proof if there is ever a dispute about wages, PF or experience.
The Real Work Environment
Most watch assembly areas are indoor, well-lit and cleaner than typical heavy factories. You will usually sit at a workbench and wear an anti-static coat, cap and sometimes finger cots. The challenge is not physical strength but focus: the same step is repeated many times, and output targets are tracked daily.
Women are widely employed in watch assembly, and many large plants provide transport, canteen and hostel or tie-ups for accommodation. Supervisors are strict about quality, so small mistakes are pointed out quickly. New joiners usually get a few days of classroom and on-line training before working independently.
Company Payroll vs Contractor Payroll
• Better job security
• Structured grades and increments
• Full statutory benefits
• Fewer openings, more competition
• Fixed-term contracts (often 6–11 months)
• Pay close to minimum wage
• PF/ESI should still apply – verify
• Good entry point to gain experience
Growth Path
Moving up usually takes one to three years per step, depending on performance and openings. An ITI or diploma, plus a clean attendance and quality record, makes the jump to trainee or supervisor roles much easier. Experience in watch or electronics assembly is also valued by mobile phone, wearables and electronics plants, which widens your options later.
A practical way to grow is to treat your first year as paid training. Learn every station on your line, ask your supervisor what skills the next grade needs, and keep copies of any internal training certificates. If your employer supports it, part-time diploma or distance courses in mechanical or electronics engineering can also qualify you for technician and junior engineer roles over time.
How to Apply: Step by Step
- Prepare a one-page resume with your name, phone, education, ITI trade (if any), any factory experience and preferred location.
- Check the official Titan Company careers page for manufacturing, trainee or apprentice openings.
- Register on the apprenticeship portal (NAPS for 10th/12th/ITI, NATS for diploma) and search for watch or electronics manufacturers.
- Contact your ITI or polytechnic placement cell about upcoming campus drives near Hosur or Uttarakhand.
- If using an agency, confirm it is registered, has a real office and does not ask for any fee.
- Attend the test and interview with original documents and photocopies, then insist on a written offer or appointment letter.
Interview Tips
- Expect a simple eyesight check, a hand-skill or dexterity test, and basic questions about your education.
- Say clearly that you can work shifts and follow hygiene rules – these are key concerns for the employer.
- If you have any assembly, mobile repair or electronics experience, mention it with examples.
- Ask politely about salary, shift timing, PF/ESI and whether you will be on company or contractor payroll.
- Dress neatly and arrive early. Punctuality is noticed in factory hiring.
- Keep answers short and honest. If you have never worked in a factory, say so and explain why you are interested and ready to learn.
Some common questions you can practise: Why do you want to work in a factory? Are you comfortable sitting and doing the same task for long hours? Can you work night shifts? Are you ready to stay near the plant? Have you done any work with small tools or electronics? Short, confident answers to these usually leave a good impression.
Scams and Common Mistakes
No genuine employer asks you to pay for an interview, uniform, training kit or offer letter. If someone asks for money on WhatsApp or by UPI, stop.
Scammers use famous brand logos on social media posts with very high salaries for “packing work from home”. Real factory jobs are on-site and the pay is in line with the ranges above.
Starting work without an appointment letter or wage record makes it hard to claim unpaid wages or PF later. Always get it in writing.
