Portugal’s aviation industry is continuing its upward growth, creating thousands of employment opportunities across airports, airlines, and ground handling companies. As international tourism, business travel, and cargo transportation expand in 2026, airports are strengthening their operational teams to ensure smooth passenger experiences and efficient aircraft turnaround. Among the most sought-after airport roles is that of a Baggage Handler, a position that forms the backbone of airport ground operations.
At the heart of Portugal’s aviation network is Lisbon Airport (Humberto Delgado Airport), the country’s busiest international gateway. Every day, hundreds of domestic and international flights arrive and depart, carrying millions of passengers and thousands of tonnes of luggage. Behind every successful flight is a dedicated team of baggage handlers who ensure luggage is transported safely, loaded correctly, and delivered on time.
Baggage handlers play a vital role in maintaining airline schedules and customer satisfaction. Their responsibilities extend beyond moving luggage—they coordinate with ramp teams, cargo departments, and airline staff to ensure every bag reaches the correct aircraft or baggage claim area. With airlines expanding routes and passenger numbers expected to rise further in 2026, recruitment for baggage handling positions is expected to remain strong throughout the year.
Depending on experience, overtime, and shift allowances, annual earnings for baggage handling professionals can reach EUR 46,000, making this an attractive career choice for individuals seeking stable employment in the aviation sector.
Growing Demand for Ground Handling Professionals
The aviation industry depends on efficient ground operations to keep flights running on schedule. Every aircraft must be unloaded, cleaned, prepared, refueled, and reloaded within a limited time before departure. Baggage handlers are one of the most important members of this process because delayed luggage handling can affect the entire flight schedule.
Lisbon Airport continues to experience increasing passenger traffic due to Portugal’s popularity as a tourist destination and its strategic location connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas. As airlines introduce additional flights and airports modernize their facilities, employers require larger ground handling teams capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
The rise of international travel, seasonal tourism, and connecting flights has also increased the volume of checked baggage processed every day, further boosting demand for trained baggage handlers.
