Amazon runs a large network of fulfilment centres, sort centres and delivery stations across the UK, and it is one of the country’s biggest warehouse employers. Hiring is constant, and it jumps every autumn for the Black Friday and Christmas peak, with full-time, part-time, fixed-term and seasonal contracts.
In September 2026 Amazon announced a pay rise for UK frontline operations staff: from 27 September 2026 the minimum starting rate is £15.10 an hour, or £16.10 in some locations, which works out to more than £31,000 a year for full-time staff. This guide covers the roles, pay, your rights under UK law, the visa position for overseas applicants and the hiring process.
What the Work Actually Involves
Warehouse Operative – Pick
Collects customer items from storage pods or shelves using a handheld scanner, working to a rate.
Warehouse Operative – Pack
Packs items into the right box, labels them and sends them down the conveyor.
Stow / Receive
Unloads inbound stock, checks it and stores it in the right location in the system.
Sorter
Works in sort centres and delivery stations sorting parcels by route before vans go out.
Delivery Associate
Delivers parcels to homes; most drivers work for Amazon Delivery Service Partner companies, not Amazon directly.

Where the Hiring Happens
Warehouse roles are posted on the official Jobs at Amazon UK site (jobsatamazon.co.uk), where you pick a site near you and choose a shift. Corporate and management roles are on amazon.jobs. Many agency job boards repost Amazon adverts, but you should apply directly on Amazon’s own site. Delivery driver jobs are usually advertised by independent Delivery Service Partner companies.
Visa Position for Overseas Applicants
Since 22 July 2025, the Skilled Worker visa generally requires jobs at RQF level 6 (degree level). Store assistant, warehouse operative, sorting and delivery roles are well below that level, so UK employers cannot sponsor overseas workers for them. You can only apply if you already have the right to work in the UK, for example as a British or Irish citizen, with settled or pre-settled status, on a Graduate visa, as the dependant of a visa holder, on a student visa within its weekly hour limit, or on the Youth Mobility Scheme (which includes a ballot-based India Young Professionals Scheme for eligible 18–30 year olds).
Contract, Benefits and Legal Rights
Minimum payFrom 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21+, £10.85 for 18–20 and £8.00 for 16–17 and apprentices.
Working hoursThe Working Time Regulations cap average weekly hours at 48 unless you choose to opt out in writing, with a 20-minute break for shifts over 6 hours.
Paid holidayFull-time workers get 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (28 days for a 5-day week), pro rata for part-time.
Pension & sick payEligible workers are auto-enrolled into a workplace pension, and Statutory Sick Pay applies if you are off ill.
Written termsYou must receive a written statement of your main terms from day one.
Union & equalityYou have the right to join a union and to fair treatment under the Equality Act 2010.
The Real Working Environment
Amazon fulfilment centres are huge buildings where you may walk many miles a shift. Work is measured by rate targets, and safety rules are strict, with safety shoes and hi-vis provided or required. Shifts are commonly 10 hours for four days, and nights are common. Breaks are fixed and short, so the pace can feel intense, especially during peak.
On the positive side, pay is above the legal minimum, the hiring process is fast, and benefits such as a staff discount, pension and Career Choice training are available to eligible staff. Workers often say the job suits people who want steady hours and are comfortable with physical, repetitive tasks.

Scams and Common Mistakes
⚠ “Visa sponsorship” offers: Anyone promising a sponsored UK visa for a warehouse, store or sorting job is misleading you. These roles are not eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship.
⚠ Fees and fake agents: Genuine UK employers never charge for applications, interviews or training. Do not pay for a “certificate of sponsorship” for these jobs.
⚠ Wrong visa type: Do not come on a visitor visa to “start work later”. Working without permission can lead to removal and a future visa ban.
