Royal Mail is the UK’s national postal service. Together with Parcelforce Worldwide it runs more than a thousand delivery offices, large mail processing centres and parcel hubs. These sites need postal workers, sorters, warehouse staff and drivers all year, with a big wave of temporary hiring before Christmas.
Most frontline staff are covered by an agreement between Royal Mail and the Communication Workers Union (CWU). In 2026 existing employees received a 3% pay rise, targeted from June. This guide explains the roles, typical pay, your rights under UK law, the visa position for overseas applicants and how to apply safely.
What the Work Actually Involves

Works in a large processing centre feeding, operating and clearing sorting machines.
Parcel Sorter / Warehouse
Sorts and loads parcels in hubs and depots, often on night shifts.
Driver (Van / LGV)

Where the Hiring Happens
Royal Mail and Parcelforce jobs are listed on the official Royal Mail Group Careers site, with a dedicated Delivery and Sorting section. You can search by postcode and role. You will also see adverts on Indeed UK, Totaljobs and the government’s Find a Job service, but apply through the official Royal Mail site. Seasonal Christmas roles are usually advertised from around September.
Visa Position for Overseas Applicants
Since 22 July 2025, the Skilled Worker visa generally requires jobs at RQF level 6 (degree level). Store assistant, warehouse operative, sorting and delivery roles are well below that level, so UK employers cannot sponsor overseas workers for them. You can only apply if you already have the right to work in the UK, for example as a British or Irish citizen, with settled or pre-settled status, on a Graduate visa, as the dependant of a visa holder, on a student visa within its weekly hour limit, or on the Youth Mobility Scheme (which includes a ballot-based India Young Professionals Scheme for eligible 18–30 year olds).
Contract, Benefits and Legal Rights
Minimum payFrom 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21+, £10.85 for 18–20 and £8.00 for 16–17 and apprentices.
Working hoursThe Working Time Regulations cap average weekly hours at 48 unless you choose to opt out in writing, with a 20-minute break for shifts over 6 hours.
Paid holidayFull-time workers get 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year (28 days for a 5-day week), pro rata for part-time.
Pension & sick payEligible workers are auto-enrolled into a workplace pension, and Statutory Sick Pay applies if you are off ill.
Written termsYou must receive a written statement of your main terms from day one.
Union & equalityYou have the right to join a union and to fair treatment under the Equality Act 2010.
The Real Working Environment
Delivery work starts early, often before sunrise, and involves a lot of walking with bags and trolleys in rain, wind and summer heat. Once the round is finished, many postal workers finish by early afternoon. Mail centres and parcel hubs are indoor but noisy, with night shifts and strict safety rules around machinery and vehicles.
Workers often praise job security, union representation and the independence of being out on a round. The tough parts are physical strain, weather and workload during peak seasons such as Christmas.

Scams and Common Mistakes
⚠ “Visa sponsorship” offers: Anyone promising a sponsored UK visa for a warehouse, store or sorting job is misleading you. These roles are not eligible for Skilled Worker sponsorship.
⚠ Fees and fake agents: Genuine UK employers never charge for applications, interviews or training. Do not pay for a “certificate of sponsorship” for these jobs.
⚠ Wrong visa type: Do not come on a visitor visa to “start work later”. Working without permission can lead to removal and a future visa ban.
