Saudi German Hospital is one of the best-known private hospital groups in Saudi Arabia, with large branches in cities such as Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and Madinah. Behind every doctor and nurse there is a big team of non-medical support staff who move patients, keep wards clean, deliver supplies and help the hospital run smoothly around the clock.
These support roles are popular with Indian workers because they usually need only basic education, come with accommodation or a housing allowance, and give steady indoor work in an air-conditioned building. Many of these jobs are filled through facility management contractors and licensed recruitment agencies rather than directly by the hospital, so it helps to understand how the system works before you apply.
In this guide we explain what porters, cleaners and helpers actually do, who is eligible, realistic salary ranges in Saudi riyal, the legal rights you have, and how to apply safely without falling for fake offers.
What Porters, Cleaners and Helpers Actually Do
A hospital porter moves patients on wheelchairs and stretchers between wards, the emergency department, radiology, operation theatres and discharge points. Porters also carry lab samples, medical records, linen trolleys and sometimes deceased patients to the mortuary under strict rules. The job needs physical stamina, gentle handling and quick response to calls from nurses.
A hospital cleaner (often called housekeeping attendant) cleans patient rooms, corridors, toilets, waiting areas and clinics using hospital-grade disinfectants. In clinical areas you follow infection-control rules: colour-coded mops and cloths, correct dilution of chemicals, and safe disposal of clinical waste in the right bags.
A general helper supports the kitchen, laundry, stores or maintenance teams. Duties can include carrying supplies, loading laundry machines, arranging stock in the medical store, helping technicians and keeping back-of-house areas tidy. Most staff work 8 to 10 hour shifts, six days a week, and night shifts are common because the hospital never closes.
Eligibility Checklist
Requirements differ between the hospital’s direct hiring and its contractors, but most adverts for non-medical support staff ask for the following.
Salary: What Each Role Usually Pays
Saudi salaries for support staff are usually quoted as basic pay plus allowances. Some contractors give free shared accommodation and transport, while others pay a housing and food allowance instead. The ranges below are monthly totals in Saudi riyal.
Overtime, night shift allowances and annual tickets can add meaningfully to your yearly earnings. Always compare the full package: free food and accommodation can be worth more than a slightly higher basic salary.
Skills That Push Your Salary Up
Support work is entry-level, but a few skills make you more valuable and help you move to better-paid positions faster.
- Basic English and some Arabic: nurses and patients appreciate staff who understand simple instructions such as room numbers, floor names and urgent requests.
- Infection-control knowledge: knowing colour codes, hand hygiene steps and spill cleaning makes you trusted in ICU and isolation areas.
- Safe patient handling: correct wheelchair and stretcher techniques reduce injuries and are often checked in interviews.
- Machine operation: floor scrubbers, laundry machines and dishwashers are used daily, and operators earn slightly more.
- Punctuality and record keeping: signing logs correctly and arriving on time are what supervisors notice when choosing team leaders.
Where Hiring Actually Happens
There are two main routes. Some positions are advertised on the hospital group’s official careers page, but these are mostly for medical, nursing and administrative staff. Most porter, cleaning and helper roles are filled by facility management and manpower companies that hold service contracts with hospitals in Saudi Arabia.
These contractors recruit from India through licensed recruitment agencies registered with the Ministry of External Affairs (look for a valid RA licence number on the eMigrate portal). Walk-in interviews are often held in cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kochi, Chennai and Lucknow, and are announced in newspapers and on agency social media pages.
Workers already in Saudi Arabia on a transferable Iqama sometimes join through local job portals or referrals from friends working in the hospital. Referrals are common in housekeeping teams, so a good word from an existing employee can matter.
Contract, Benefits and Your Legal Rights
Most support staff sign a two-year contract that is renewable. Before you fly, make sure your offer letter clearly states the employer name (often the contractor, not the hospital), basic salary, allowances, working hours, accommodation and the number of off days.
- Governing law: employment in Saudi Arabia is covered by the Saudi Labour Law and the rules of the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (HRSD).
- Salary payment: employers are expected to use the Wage Protection System run through Mudad, which tracks whether salaries are paid on time.
- Working hours: Standard hours are 8 a day or 48 a week (reduced during Ramadan for Muslim workers), and overtime is paid at basic hourly wage plus 50%.
- Annual leave: 21 days of paid annual leave, rising to 30 days after five years.
- End-of-service gratuity: usually half a month’s wage for each of the first five years and a full month’s wage for each year after that.
- Minimum pay: Saudi Arabia has no fixed minimum wage for expatriate workers.
- Passport: your employer should not keep your passport against your will. Ask for it back politely if it is taken for visa processing.
- Complaints: unpaid wages or contract breaches can be reported to HRSD and the Musaned/Qiwa platforms.
The Real Work Environment
Hospitals are busy but well organised. You will work in air-conditioned buildings, which is a big advantage over outdoor construction jobs in Saudi heat. Uniforms, gloves and masks are provided, and you will usually get a short induction on hygiene and safety in your first week.
The challenging part is emotional and physical. You will see sick and injured people every day, sometimes in emergency situations, and porters walk many kilometres in a single shift. Night shifts can feel long, and festival days do not always mean leave because the hospital runs every day.
Accommodation is typically shared rooms arranged by the contractor, with 4 to 8 people per room and a common kitchen. Transport buses run between the camp and the hospital at shift times. Most Indian workers say the atmosphere is respectful when they do their work properly and follow the supervisor’s instructions.
Hospital Porter vs Housekeeping Cleaner
These are the two most common entry-level roles. Here is how they compare in day-to-day life.
Many workers start as cleaners, learn hospital routines and later move into porter or store roles when a vacancy opens. Showing reliability in your first contract is the fastest way to switch.
Growth Path: Where This Job Can Lead
Non-medical support jobs are a starting point, not a dead end. Workers who stay disciplined often grow like this:
How to Apply, Step by Step
Interview Tips
Interviews for support staff are short and practical. Recruiters mainly check attitude, fitness and honesty.
- Dress neatly and arrive early; first impressions matter more than certificates for these roles.
- Explain any cleaning, hotel, hospital or warehouse experience with simple real examples.
- Say clearly that you are comfortable with night shifts and working around patients.
- If asked, show how you would push a wheelchair safely or clean a spill step by step.
- Ask the employer name, salary breakup and accommodation details before you agree to anything.
